Netflix February_day.19 – HAYWIRE (2012)

_Day 19, on the verge of flipping the tens column for the 2nd and final time. Today, we have Haywire, a 2012 action film starring real-life MMA competitor Gina Carano, co-starring Bill Paxton, Michael Douglass, and Bill Paxton’s pedo mustache. It also features a cameo from Antonio Banderas as the Dos Equis guy.

_Gina Carano plays Mallory Kane, a secret agent of some kind who gets betrayed by her employers. She then goes on the run and beats the fuck out of some people.

_Maybe I’ve just been brainwashed by Jimmy, but this did totally feel like an old school 70’s-esque action film. The on-foot chase scenes, the musical score, the fist fights with no music playing over them…this totally seemed like an old school action flick. Except maybe the actual fist fights. Lots of MMA moves, way too good of fight choreography. Can’t really compare that part. Oh, and also the fact that there was a woman lead in an action film. That doesn’t seem very 70’s-ish either.

_Considering that the movie seems like a star vehicle for Carano, I wonder how exactly so many big names got attached to it. Not that it’s not an enjoyable film, it is. But…holy shit. Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Bandaras, Bill Paxton. And directed by Steven Soderburgh. Holy shit! So many people!

_Ultimately, while it’s not the greatest movie ever made, I felt like Haywire knew exactly what it was and didn’t try to be more than that. And it succeeded at what it tried to do. Good on ya, Haywire.

_Stop by tomorrow as we watch Swamp Thing. See you then~
